“Cara Cognatio”

Release Day (4/20/22) for Wyldblood Magazine #8 with my story, “Cara Cognatio.” How many ways can a jar of Spaghetti Sauce kill you? Tony, an Italian American, must find a way to balance his personal life and his familial obligations or face death by Spaghetti Sauce. This story originated from a prompt to write creepypasta. Not being familiar with the term, I had visions of the Flying Spaghetti Monster or horrible, slinking spaghetti noodles on the prowl, stalking their next strangling victim. Having looked the definition up, I was disappointed to find that it was a horror genre of urban legend, usually in a first-person account. Intrigued by the idea of a horror story with actual, eerie pasta, I became determined to write about creepy, pasta sauce, or rather, malevolent, spaghetti sauce. And, since every good Italian family has at least one Tony, if not multiple, the narrator had to be Tony. Once named, he spoke to me about those dang spaghetti noodles and his relationship with his father. Listening to the voice of Tony, I scribbled furiously on a sub-zero, winter’s night in a Colorado mountain town. I could almost smell that simmering sauce and see the candle in the Chianti fiasco, dripping wax, illuminating family secrets, and “Cara Cognatio” was born.
